Edward Yell
Solicitor
Edward studied Political Science at the University of Birmingham before converting to Law at BPP Law School, London. In 2005 Edward was awarded the Queen Mother Scholarship by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and, in 2006, was called to the Bar. Edward has since qualified as a Solicitor with Carter-Ruck.
Edward's work is split equally between the firm's media and commercial litigation practices. He has acted for numerous individuals, companies and charities in general commercial litigation. In 2006-2008, Edward acted for 45 individuals in proceedings against various financial institutions (Stax v Bank of Nova Scotia Channel Islands Ltd and others [2007] EWHC 1153). In 2008 he assisted Adam Tudor representing a multi-national corporation in commercial proceedings before the Privy Council and recently successfully defended the Trustees of a charity in undue influence proceedings brought by a former donor (Azaz v Denton & Ors [2009] EWHC 1759 (QB)).
Edward also has considerable experience in the firm's core libel and privacy litigation practice. In 2007 he assisted Nigel Tait in proceedings brought by the Labour MP, Martyn Jones against the Daily Mail which resulted in a jury award of damages in favour of Mr Jones. In 2009 he acted for the prominent feminist, Erin Pizzey, in her complaint against Pan Macmillan regarding allegations made in Andrew Marr's 'A History of Modern Britain' and obtained an apology, a statement in open court, significant damages and a full recall of the book. More recently, he secured damages of £100,000 for an individual falsely accused by the News of the World of being a terrorist financier.
Edward also acts for a number of companies in relation to their dealings with the media. Invariably such work requires careful coordination with existing public relations strategy, to ensure the best possible outcome for the client.
Edward has been published in the Solicitors Journal writing in defence of the conditional fee regime and recently featured as the 'Lawyer in the News' in the Law Society Gazette.
