Stephen Loughrey
After obtaining a first class degree in Law, Stephen trained as a journalist with the BBC. He later returned to law to pursue his interest in media litigation.
Since joining Carter-Ruck in 2006, Stephen has acted for a number of high profile individuals and large multi-national companies. He assisted Nigel Tait and Hanna Basha in advising Frank Warren in his successful libel complaints against The Daily Record newspaper and the publisher, Random House, obtaining substantial damages on both occasions. He continues to assist the firm’s managing partner Cameron Doley in advising heads of state and other leading Middle Eastern figures. He was part of the team that advised the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Al-Thani, in his recent libel claim against pan-Arab daily newspaper, Asharq Alawsat. Stephen also helped secure substantial damages for Libyan businessman Dr Mohammed Houni in his libel action against the author of a Libyan website.
Working alongside Adam Tudor, Stephen is currently advising such diverse clients as Kate and Gerry McCann and Trafigura (one of the world's largest commodities trading companies) on a range of media related matters.
Stephen specialises in defamation law and has successfully sued over numerous defamatory articles, securing large sums in damages and prominent apologies for his clients. He has particular experience of the Offer of Amends regime, having obtained a number of early victories for clients. Stephen also has extensive experience of privacy related matters, and has, when necessary, obtained urgent injunctions to prevent newspapers from publishing clients’ private information.
