Highlights
Claire studied English and French law at Exeter University and the University of Aix-Marseilles. She joined Carter-Ruck as a trainee solicitor in 1994, qualifying in 1996 and was made a partner in 2000. Her core practice is libel litigation and media-related advice, from privacy and breach of confidence to data protection and protection from harassment.
Claire works with her clients, who typically range from politicians and celebrities to business people, professionals and academics, to find practical solutions to problems. She offers trouble-shooting advice pre-publication and advice on how to deal with unwanted media scrutiny generally. Over the years, Claire has conducted a number of complex pieces of libel litigation; early in her career the long-running case of David Johnson v BUPA, settled on the eve of trial. Libel highlights include Berezovsky v Fridman (in which a jury awarded Boris Berezovsky £50,000 in damages) and Falkender v BBC, in which she acted for Lady Falkender (who as Marcia Williams was Prime Minister Harold Wilson's political secretary). Recently Claire has acted for Andrew Pelling MP, in his complaint against Associated Newspapers Limited.
Claire has worked on many cases involving jurisdictional disputes, including Berezovsky v Forbes, which culminated in a landmark decision in Mr Berezovsky's favour in the House of Lords in May 2000; and Chadha v Dow Jones (Court of Appeal).
In addition to her defamation practice, Claire undertakes complex High Court commercial litigation. For example, she has successfully obtained a world-wide freezing injunction and has considerable experience in service of proceedings and enforcement of judgments out of the jurisdiction. Her practice has led her to deal regularly with lawyers in other jurisdictions, for example: BVI, Hong Kong, China, Ukraine and Russia.
Claire regularly gives lectures to lawyers and in-house seminars to clients on libel and privacy law.
