Luke graduated from University College London with First Class Honours in History. After studying law, he trained and qualified at international law firm Clifford Chance, working in its London and Milan offices.
After five years at Clifford Chance, Luke joined Carter-Ruck and specialises in defamation, privacy and all areas of media litigation and reputation management. He advises a broad range of clients, including Heads of State, governments, MPs, Peers, celebrities and leading business people. On the defendant side, Luke acts for publishers and broadcasters, including on a number of cases for the international television news network Al Jazeera.
Luke has acted in a number of privacy and breach of confidence cases, which included obtaining urgent injunctions to prevent the publication of his clients' private information. He is currently representing several clients in relation to the hacking of their voicemail by the News of the World, including the singer James Blunt and Nigel Farage MEP.
Luke has represented numerous claimants in libel actions against the UK and international media. He recently acted for the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his successful defamation claim against the London Daily Telegraph. The Prime Minister obtained a public apology in Court, apologies in the Daily Telegraph and on its website and a substantial sum in damages. Luke was also part of the team acting for Frank Warren, the boxing promoter, in his successful libel action and landmark Court of Appeal ruling against the publisher Random House over false allegations published in the autobiography of boxer Ricky Hatton.
Luke has extensive experience protecting the reputations of individuals and companies against unwarranted coverage on the internet, successfully acting against Google, ISPs and numerous UK and international websites.
Luke also specialises in public international law issues, particularly cases with a diplomatic or political context. He advises clients on world-wide sanctions regimes and state/diplomatic immunity issues, and is currently engaged in cases arising out of the events of 9/11.
Luke has experience representing clients in large-scale commercial litigation. He has recently secured over £1 million for a very high profile celebrity and represented the company Sports Network in its multi-million High Court action against the boxing world champion Joe Calzaghe.
Luke is the co-author of two chapters of the recently published "Carter-Ruck on Libel and Privacy" and has had a number of articles published on defamation and privacy.
