Nigel graduated from Nottingham University with BA (Hons) in law and joined Carter-Ruck as a trainee in 1986. He qualified in October 1988 and was appointed a Partner in 1990.
Nigel's principal areas of expertise are two-fold.
(1) Media litigation and reputation management
Nigel has been described in recent entries of the Chambers and Partners guide to the legal profession (Chambers) as a "really brilliant tactician who keeps his objectivity" (Chambers 2011), whose "experience makes you feel incredibly safe" and "who received widespread praise for his practice" (Chambers 2010), a "master litigator", a "fearless litigator and brilliant tactician" who "adds an enormous value to the libel field with his superb judgement and genuine charm" (Chambers 2009), "an amazing solicitor", "pre-eminent in his field of expertise", "always tough when fighting for us", "tenacious and astute" and "always has his finger on the pulse" (Chambers and Partners 2008). Nigel has been consistently ranked in Band 1 of the Guide.
Nigel has obtained numerous apologies for clients (including on the front page and on television and radio), numerous settlements involving damages in six figures, and many substantial awards at trial (including the highest ever award to a company) both by Jury and Judge alone.
Nigel has obtained numerous injunctions for clients restraining infringement of their privacy by the press or former associates.
Nigel has worked on four Law Society Committees looking into reforms to libel practice, privacy law and civil procedure. He has spoken on 3 occasions at the Oxford Union Debating Society on libel and privacy.
(2) Commercial litigation
Nigel has acted in numerous actions for breach of contract, professional negligence, financial misselling, breach of trust and breach of fiduciary duty winning tens of millions of pounds for clients in such cases over the last few years.
Nigel has successfully sued banks, pension advisers and financial advisers in many cases where the clients required a safe or cautious investment but lost money.
A number of such cases have been conducted on a conditional ("no win, no fee") basis supplemented with After the Event Insurance to cover disbursements and the possibility of an adverse costs order.
Nigel has also obtained injunctions for clients against former employees acting in breach of restrictive covenants or who have used confidential information taken from former employers in setting up their own businesses or working for competitors.
