Claire
Gill
Claire read English law and French law at Exeter University and joined
Carter-Ruck as a trainee solicitor in 1994. Claire became a partner
in 2000.
Claire's main area of practice is defamation, but she advises on all
aspects of media litigation, including privacy and intellectual property
matters. Claire has worked on many cases with an international bias;
she has for instance represented both American and Russian business
people in libel disputes against both foreign and British publishers.
Her recent work also includes representing BBC radio cricket correspondent,
Jonathan Agnew in a complaint against Private Eye, representing Lady
Falkender (who as Marcia Williams was Prime Minister Harold Wilson's
political secretary) in a complaint against the BBC, and representing
former Big Brother contestant Lesley Sanderson in complaints against
the Sunday Sport and The Star newspapers under the firm's conditional
fee scheme.
She represented the firm's long-standing client, Boris Berezovsky,
in a libel case against the Russian private bank Alfa bank and its chairman
Mikhail Fridman. At trial, a jury, in May 2006, awarded Mr Berezovsky
£50,000 in damages.
In addition to her litigation work, Claire regularly gives pre-publication
advice to publishing companies on libel, privacy and copyright matters.
Claire has also advised a major publishing company on all aspects of
compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998. Claire gives lectures
on defamation law, both to those within the legal profession and outside
it.
