After reading law at Cambridge and articles at McKenna & Co Mark
Thomson joined Schilling & Lom in 1988, where he became a Partner
in 1992. He joined Carter-Ruck as a Partner in 2002.
Mark specialises in all aspects of media law, including defamation,
human rights and privacy and acts for both claimants and defendants.
He also practices in the areas of copyright and passing off and
does media regulatory work involving the Broadcasting Standards
Commission, Press Complaints Commission and the Independent Television
Commission.
Mark is well known for acting for a number of high profile clients
such as Marco Pierre White, Michelle Collins, Naomi Campbell, Kate Winslet,
Caprice and Simon le Bon. Since joining Carter-Ruck he has represented
Caprice in a successful libel action against The Sun and Carlton Television
in a successful libel action against the News of the World concerning
the Cook Report and has issued proceedings on behalf of Castaway Television
Productions Limited (whose directors include Sir Bob Geldof, Lord Waheed
Alli and Charlie Parsons) against Granada and London Weekend Television
for damages and injunction for infringement of copyright and passing
off in respect of the broadcast of "I'm a Celebrity
Get me
out of here!".
Mark is the Co-contributor to the book "Privacy in the Media -
The Developing Law", edited by Hugh Tomlinson QC, and has written
articles recently on "Privacy and prior restraint after the Human
Rights Act" for Communications Law and "A New Respect for
the right to privacy" for Legal Week.
