Cameron is Carter-Ruck’s Senior Partner.  He specialises in Public International Law, International Arbitration and Litigation, Dispute Resolution and Regulatory cases involving an international or diplomatic context and high-profile media cases.

Cameron was previously the firm’s Managing Partner for 11 years. He trained at Carter-Ruck under the firm’s founder Peter Carter-Ruck and became a partner in 1995. Cameron graduated from The Queen’s College, Oxford, with First Class Honours in Modern History before converting to law.

His clients include a large number of governments, heads of state and leading political figures from across the world as well as commercial entities and individuals requiring specialist advice on international issues.

In addition to many years conducting litigation in the High Court in London, Cameron has extensive experience of matters proceeding before the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights as well as under the auspices of ICSID, the LCIA, the ICC and other arbitral bodies, due to his role leading Carter-Ruck’s international arbitration practice.

More than three decades at Carter-Ruck has given Cameron enormous experience of dealing with the UK and international media and he is able to apply the reputation management expertise he has acquired to deal with media interest in cases involving his clients.

Cameron continues to bring claims for a number of his clients against the international media. He has also represented Al Jazeera Media Network in both legal and regulatory matters for many years.  In late 2022, Cameron’s team filed papers with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague seeking an investigation into the killing of renowned journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by the Israeli military and the prosecution of those responsible.

Cameron’s clients include:

  • Al Jazeera Media Network in a very large range of legal and regulatory matters over more than 20 years. He is presently leading the team conducting its claim against the Arab Republic of Egypt before an ICSID-appointed tribunal under the 1999 Bilateral Investment Treaty between Qatar and Egypt. He has also led Al Jazeera’s successful defence of a number of matters raised before its UK regulator Ofcom and continues to undertake a significant volume of pre-broadcast work for the Network’s channels
  • The Qatar 2022 World Cup Bid Committee and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy for the Qatar World Cup

Media-related successes include the recovery of more than £500,000 together with the publication of a front page apology upon the settlement of a claim brought by Sheikha Mouza Al Misnad (wife of the then Emir of Qatar) against the newspaper Azzaman; the award of £165,000 – one of the largest libel awards of recent years – to Sheikh Rashid Ghannouchi (the then leader in exile of the Tunisian opposition) against global satellite news channel Al Arabiya; and the victory achieved by the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, against London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Cameron was the co-editor of the sixth edition of ‘Carter-Ruck on Libel and Privacy’ and a contributor to ‘Whistleblowing’, published by the Oxford University Press.  He sits on the Advisory Council of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and various advisory bodies at Oxford University.
