
Partners Charles Enderby Smith and Tom Cameron were invited to contribute to Portland’s 2025 Commercial Courts Report with reflections on the notable rebound in the number of Russian disputes before the Commercial Court over the past year.
Several factors appear to underlie this rise, including recent increases to the UK Government’s general licence fee caps and a more nuanced approach by UK firms in acting for non-sanctioned Russian clients.
There is also a growing number of disputes where sanctions themselves are the subject, such as claims of alleged prohibition of performance of contracts by sanctions.
